Whose gonna rock this town now? Fly high, Fly proud and fly loud Billy- we always loved you and always will- the echo of your passing is deafening-
Since waking this morning to the unbelievable news of Billy's passing, I have not stopped crying all day. I have been a life long fan and have been going to see Billy since I was about 14 years old, from the Thumping Tum, Catcher, Village Green on Saturday afternoons, 72 and 73 Sunbury's, at the Melbourne Town Hall, Myer Music Bowl and everywhere else he played in those days. In recent years we have been to every show at Crown Casino, Queenscliff Music Festival, a number of RSL clubs around Melbourne and with Deep Purple where he absolutely blew them off the stage, just to name a few. Sadly the last time was the Lobby Loyde concert in August. I only wished we had known he was in Melbourne at the weekend so we could have seen him for the last time. I can always remember the day my husband decided to leave me, November 1997 which also happened to be the Mushroom concert which was on television, even though I was devastated I still had to see Thorpie on the concert and for the time he was singing I forgot all about everything else, he always made me happy during my darkest time. In recent months I have seen U2 and Eric Clapton and nothing, ABSOLUTELY nothing compares with Thorpie, nothing has, and I don't think anybody will ever move me the way he did. Every time I saw him I felt young again, and memories of Sunbury would come flooding back, I used to transform myself back to the old days. We all adored him and I know his music will live on forever. I was always amazed at the range of the age group that attended the shows, the 18 year olds loved him just as much, which used to make me a bit jealous and I wanted to say 'hey, he's ours', he belongs to our time when we were young, but no, he belongs to all ages and his legacy and what he has done for Australian music will live on forever. The thought of not never being able to go and see Thorpie again is just unbearable, music will never be the same again for me. Deepest sympathy to family. We will love you forever Billy, you are an absolute legend and our hero.

I remember seeing Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs play on stage at the Whyalla "Civic Building" way back about 1966 .... Ray Brown & the Whispers was also playing, and then in the eighties Billy played at the Westland Pub. Truly a sad day for all rock fans - a great artist, a real music legend; you'll be missed Billy.

Gone but never forgotten. R.I.P. Some people I know think that you were crazy, but you were nothing short of being an Australian Rock Icon. Your musical jouney took us to somewhere over the rainbow, it really did.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to your family, and may God bless. Trevor Lambert. Such a shock waking this morning to this very sad news. Deepest condolences to Billys' family. Somewhere over that rainbow he will still be rocking. His music will live on forever........... I think I'm still in shock and I will be for a while to come. Although I'm only 34, I'm a huge fan of Aussie music of the 60s and 70s - and Billy, you're at the top of the list (along with the great JOK). My thoughts tonight go out to Lynn, Rusty, Lauren, and all of Billy's family and friends. Rest In Peace, Billy - you are a true Aussie rock legend - and you aways will be (and you were a bloody nice bloke!). I miss you already. Teresa (Sth Australia) xoxo Billy RIP (Rock in Peace) I am writing this email listening to somewhere over the Rainbow, one of Billy's greatest songs. My first BT concert was at the Trocoderio (spelling could be wrong) in George St city which was an 870 Club function (2GB) in 1964. I was hooked. Sunbury was great, Dee Why Hotel, Capital theatre in Canberra, the Queanbeyan gig, etc.etc I can remember going to concert at the Tivoli in Sydney (1982-1983) and everyone was yelling for Over the Rainbow, but Thorpie in his usual manner said "I am Fxxxking sick of singing this Fxxxing song", ignored the requests and immediately played Rock me Baby. I was at one of His gigs at the Bondi Life Savers Club (early 70s) and the support group was unknown group called AC/DC, the lead singer said to me "if we could be as famous as Thorpie we have really made it" The concert I enjoyed the most was his return Concert at the Dee Why RSL club, there we were all these 40 - 50 year olds straight from work in their suits and smart casual Gucci attire waiting for Thorpie and the original Aztecs to appear. Question is do 40-50 year olds sit in their chairs, like respectable mature adults and clap enthusiastically at the end of each song. No, not when Aztecs are playing, you do as you did when you were teenager charge the stage and rock on. What a site it would have been for the uneducated, here was over 100 people in their 40s & 50s carrying on like there were in the teens, but then that was the magic of Thorpie. I recently had the privilege of attending Thorpies acoustic gig at Fairfield RSL club, and it was unbelievable, how can someone pump out so much power at an acoustic show. He did sing Over the Rainbow and it was great and acknowledged that it was one of His biggest hits. As we all are what a great loss to the Ozzie music industry, but if was not for people like Thorpie we would not have an industry. Thanks Billy for the memories and the muisic that will live on untill I RIP. Derek. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS BILLY! MOST PEOPLE I KNOW……………………….!! AN AUSSIE MUSIC LEGEND. FOREVER ETCHED INTO THAT OZ MUSIC LEGENDS BOARD. VALE BILLY THORPE, FISH from ADELAIDE Another Icon of our music heritage has now gone, the MUSIC LIVES ON and ON. LOVE YOU BILLY XXX CHRISXX I am just so filled with sadness and my heart breaks for you, Lynne, Rusty & Lauren. May God bless you and keep you strong. I fell madly "in love" with Billy a long time ago...when he sang "Over The Rainbow" I was transfixed..to me Billy was the most gorgeous man alive.
May I share a memory with you... I was in Bondi Junction with my parents when I spotted Billy diving past in his red Aston Martin... I pleaded with my poor ol' Dad to chase him in our old car, which he did, and we found his car in the Grace Bros carpark, but no Billy. So, like a good Billy fan I sat and waited, and waited, and waited until he appeared ...with a roll of carpet over his shoulder, and a plaster on his nose. He was so beautiful and so kind. He gave me his autograph and autographs for my school friends too. A memory I have never forgotten. Billy will always hold a special place in the hearts and memories of all music loving Aussies.

Billy, you influenced my life as a teenager. In the US the beach boys did it for me, but in Australia you and the Aztecs did it for me. You are a legend and i will always remember your great songs. "Over the rainbow" is absolutely the best version i have ever heard. Your energy was everlasting in your performances. Jenny / Christie Downs Adelaide SA
"BILLY THORPE"... In all honesty until a couple of years ago the name didn't mean much to me. I am only 30 years old so I didn't grow up listening to your music. Sure I knew your songs but if someone was to ask me who sang them I wouldn't have a clue what to tell them. Two years ago I went to a garage sale and came across an autobiography called "Sex, Thugs and Rock'n'Roll" By a man called Billy Thorpe, after reading the back cover I decided it looked like a good read, so I brought it. Do you know I couldn't put that book down. By the back page I was madly in love with this rebel of rock'n'roll. And from then on when ever I hear one of your songs I could say that this is one of Billy Thorpe songs, and even be able to picture a face to put with the voice. Today the world is a very sad place due to the loss of you, but heaven is looking very inviting one day. R.I.P Billy, the legend and the music will live forever. Jackie A true legend that went far too early. He has influenced generations and will continue to. To encapsulate a life in a single simple word is truly a mark of a life went spent. And the word is 'Thorpie' Denis, Altona BILLY YOU WILL BE SADLY MISSED BY ALL YOU, PETE WELLS, AND IAN RILEN CAN NOW JAM IN PEACE AND HAVE THE LOUDEST, MEANEST BAND EVER TO BE HEARD EVER !! I WILL BE LISTENING We are very shocked and sad. Very sorry to hear. best wishes to his family and friends Shock, sorrow, sadness, fond and happy memories of our teens and 20's. Always admired the man.Sincere condolences to Billy's family and friends John & Monica I never knew you or seen you at all when i was younger or in your aztec days ... i seen you much later in life. Martin Lang Billy, we were looking forward to you coming to Coffs Harbour, but you will always remain in my heart as the best. The Three Swallows has gone, now you Billy. I Love You man.You will always live in my dreams.
Billy Thorpe, What a legend, a true Australian rock and roller, who will be sadly missed. My thoughts go to his wife and daughters. Never to be forgotten, my children as I was will be brought up with your music. John... Bridgeway Hotel Adelaide To the family of Billy Thorpe, I am a 21yr old girl and Billy's music rivets through my skin everytime I hear it. I wish you all the best and my thoughts are with your family at this time of greiving. With much love, Kylie and Phillip My first experience of Thorpie was at the Dandenong Tech School where he played at the school dance (yep, believe it or not!). He let rip with Gangster of Love and the Principal blew a fuse! Meanwhile us youngsters just hitting puberty rocked on and on and on...no girl was safe that night. Then on to Sunbury No.1, the best concert Australia has ever seen. From there to the Sandown, Rosebud, Myer Music Bowl, the Whitehorse, Village Green, Hallam Hotel, we followed you, your wide-eyed disciples. I could never play the guitar very well, but the first real song I ever played was ‘Most People I know...’. I still have a guitar (electric of course and amp). Still play badly but it’s always the same song and always loud. Now you have the time maybe you can smile down on me and guide these older and slower fingers. I feel a sadness and a loss usually only reserved for family and very close friends. I respected your talent and the way you dealt with your legendary status. Now the stage is a little bit higher and bigger so to the Head Honcho in Heaven...LOCK UP YOUR ANGELS!!! Grant McKay You are now part of that rainbow, a great man of colours and always a smile. I was devastated when I awoke this morning to the sad news that Billy Thorpe had died. I was there at Surf City, the Beach Hut - all those memorable times when only Billy Thorpe could keep a crowd “rock and rollin”. I to am 60 and I feel like I have lost a good friend who was so talented and so for Aussie music. I feel for his wife and daughters – my memories will last forever. A very sad fan from the 60’s and 70’s As I sit here in my Most treasured shirt (Most People I know Think that I'm Crazy) I can no longer hold back the tears as I hear my utmost Fav song "Over the Rainbow" RIP Billy...hugs to your family..! Love an Ozzy Girl Billy Thorpe A music legend making Australian think of there youth & for me who played it, made you rock your ass off. I'm in my 30's Thorpe's music will always be played in our home. Love u Billy Thanks for sounds that are the soundtrack of life Mark I am in shock, my wife and I only saw Billy last Friday night at the Doncaster Hotel, we were 2 metres away from the legend, who laughed , sang fantastically well, and of course played guitar like he was blessed. We will miss him. Rolf and De Backman |
