Cynthia Barker Bourn 5/7/1921 to 7/3/2006

Cynthia was the only child of Sylv and Lance Coombe, born on the 5th July, 1921 and grew up in Croydon and Brompton. In her early teens she met Reg Bourn, the youngest of 5 children born to Phoebe and William Bourn of Welland. After a courtship of several years they married in 1943 and raised 4 children, Noel, Faye, Cheryl and Cynthia. Having had a rather lonely childhood she wanted to ensure that any children she had would have the benefit growing up of having siblings....she didn't really know what she was letting herself in for!

In her late teens when she was working at General Motors Holdens at Woodville, she met Dorothy Cox and the two girls formed a lifelong friendship; Dorothy was Cynthia's bridesmaid and later when Dorothy married Gordon the two couples remained dear friends throughout their marriages.

Cynthia was the homemaker who looked after the home and raised her four children while Reg put in many long hours working in the family business. She was always supportive of Reg and the children, putting their needs and aspirations above her own. Many times over the years she played peacemaker to the two volatile personalities in her life, her mother's and her husband's, having inherited her father's peaceful and serene nature.

Cynthia was devoted to her family and as the children were growing up she spent many hours in the kitchen with Sylv as her assistant cooking up countless batches of home made pasties, jam tarts, egg and bacon pies and butterfly cakes for the many picnics and social gatherings the family enjoyed. Many weekends and school holidays were spent at the holiday house at Normanville which was a converted railway carriage that Reg and Cynthia's father had modified, where Cynthia and Sylv would stay with the children while Reg traveled back and forth to work and spend weekends. Cynthia and Sylv were a constant pair seen walking down to the beach carrying fresh banana sandwiches to the children spending the whole day under the tent and playing in the waves with their best friend, Tiddles the Australian Terrier.

As their children grew up Cynthia and Reg enjoyed many caravan holidays with Reg's brother John and his wife Doris, while Sylv stayed with the kids. Cynthia always welcomed her children's friends and as they all met and married their partners, she made them a part of her family too. She and Reg were thrilled when the grandchildren came along and always enjoyed family get-togethers with the whole crew.

Cynthia and Reg were very active in their community for many years, being involved with the Lions Club of Hindmarsh where they made many friends as they worked on countless projects and among many other things Cynthia spent hundreds of hours at various local shopping centres selling raffle tickets for the annual Christmas stocking and the Easter basket raising money for the worthwhile projects undertaken by the Lions Club. She was also involved for many years with Meals on Wheels, delivering hot midday meals to the elderly folk of the district in their homes.

As Cynthia and Reg grew older they settled into a different kind of life although still enjoying companionship of friends and family until Reg died suddenly and the full extent of Cynthia's dementia became more apparent. Cynthia had a very had time coping with the loss of Reg and her health swiftly declined. Her rapidly deteriorating memory and cognitive functions necessitated her entry into an aged care facility. In December last year she was diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas, and she returned to the care facility where the wonderful nursing staff and her loving children ensured that her last months were spent in safety and as much comfort as possible.
