Flying on the wings of an eagle
You took to the sky
Your mind was made up
This was your final journey,
you lead and amazing life
touching so any people

You were an unbelievably,
generous person and a quiet
achiever. You never once said
why me? You took it all in your
stride never ever complaining.
You leave the world a better
place than when you entered it.
Gone, but never forgotten.

Jan was a very special person and a dear friend to me in my time in Vanuatu. We always kept in touch. I received a message from her less than a month ago for my birthday. She always thought of others before herself. The world will be a poorer place for her passing. But we should all remember her legacy in distant parts of the world where she worked and made a positive difference in the lives of others. I remember asking her what I should take to remote outer islands of Vanuatu. Practical as ever, she said soap! And I made many friends with my packets of soap. Those that are left are in my thoughts and prayers.

I first met Jan in Cambodia when she was working for SCA. She took me to a village for a meeting with over 100 women so I could hear the reality of their lives. Jan was already working on it. We bonded instantly. She was the practical voice of reason "that won't work; this will". She was funny, warm-hearted and really knew women's health. We toted up big phone bills between Brisbane and Melbourne and I'm glad for that. Jan, you made a difference everywhere you worked. Rest in peace, my dear friend. I'll miss you.

Jan's life and achievements are worth celebrating; through her work she improved the health and life of many thousands of people in our region. I worked with her in western China, and her quiet, sensible and thoughtful approach gained the professional respect of her colleagues and peers. She'll be sadly missed as a good friend; her wicked dry wit made me laugh and there was no-one better to catch up with over a cuppa. My deep condolences to Jan's family, and please know there are many people in different countries who will miss her and grieve her passing.

I am very very sorry to have the news of Jan's passing. Jan worked with me for about 4 years in Vanuatu, she was steadfast, reliable and very popular and really highly regarded by the nationals. I last met with Jan in Jakarta, she was just the same. I will always remember her as kind, generous, and the dry humour with the beautiful smile on her face. I am sure many people will miss Jan for the good things she brought to this world and the kindness she showed to those less advantaged

I feel so sad at the loss of one so gentle in nature, so friendly and practically helpful. I knew Jan over the time she worked in Port Vila as a colleague of my husband. Many a time I would wander down to the Ministry of Health office at lunchtime and enjoy a relaxed chat with her and Asha leaning on the railings outside the door. I was inspired by her simple and practical advice on how to deal with infected mozzie bites and such tropical trials. I admired her style - the pretty hair decorations she wore for the sheer pleasure of it. Our family memories of Vanuatu will always be the dearer for her friendship and happy influence. I send you all my sympathy at this time.

I only worked with Jan once, but with someone like her, it was always instant warmth and rapport and a genuine respect for her knowledge and abilities. The world is a better place for having known her and poorer for her departure.

I first met Jan when she was working with Save in Cambodia and I with Save in Lao. Jan came with the Cambodian health study tour group and then later on holiday. Over the years we have met up in several other places. I feel very sad at the loss of a good friend and valued colleague, who knew her "stuff" and was always a great sounding board. Like others, I loved Jan's delightful sense of humour, being ever ready to crack a joke and those wonderful dramatic pauses and meaningful looks she used to draw you into a story. Whenever she called I knew it would be for a long yarn, that she had plenty of time for me, and immediately I put the kettle on to better savour the stories to come. Deepest sympathy to all her family in their terrible loss.

I have come to learn about Jan's passing away just this week and would like to express my sincere sympathy and condolences to the family of late Jan Oneil. Jan worked in Vanuatu as a Community Health Advisor to the Ministry of Health on a five year Health Sector Planning and Management Development project [January 1999- June 2004] Her expertise and efforts in working with the ministry and in particular the Provincial Health Managers and the community health nurses in improving and maintaining quality care and appropriate service delivery whether in urban or very remote communities of Vanuatu will be always treasured as she has brought.

I knew Jan in Cambodia and then had the pleasure of working with her in Indonesia. One can never froget Jan's great professionalism and her passion for her work coupled with a wry humour, healthy cynicism and especially the gallantry with which she faced her diagnosis and treatment. Jan was one of a kind, we are all better for having known and worked with her, she is trulyu missed.
