The world has lost an original
Les Mason was born in California and came to Australia in 1961. With wife Gail he moved to Perth in 1981.
Les is considered the father of graphic design in Australia having established his own studio Les Mason Graphic Design in the late 60's. His work was recognised and awarded internationally and in Australia for his fresh, original and often humorous approach to graphic design.
His hospitality to his colleagues and other designers was also legendary with many Friday night soirees at his studio.
He was the love and soul mate of his artist wife Gail and much loved father of Lou and Mary, son-in-laws Clive and Ken, grandsons Michael and Oscar.
He died in Istanbul attending the 2009 Alliance Graphique International Congress with colleagues whose work he admired and who admired his.
The world is a sadder place for his passing but Les wouldn't want any sad songs...'on the road again'...

Uncle Les was a real inspiration for me. I think without those early conversations we all had together in Perth and then while you were staying in Invercargill – about art and design, I wouldn't be where I am today. You guys opened up a whole world, you showed me a way of looking at things I'd never have seen at home.
I loved Les because he was a character, he had a point of view and wasn't afraid to voice it. He could be sensitive and a bear depending on whether he agreed with you or not. He was wild and he was poetic. His passing is bittersweet, but I'm glad he was at a design conference, talking to people he liked about something he loved. I'll always remember my conversations with Les and I'm so thankful I was able to visit you both in 2007.

Just like Les to go on his next journey whilst in a wild place like Istanbul! Gail and I worked together at Hayes Cowcher Dailey. Les was/is the love of her life. He will be greatly missed, for a man with such 'richness' is rare. So glad to have had you both at home for dinner with Rob Hall and Lauris, just a few months ago. Hearing the lovely accolades at Wes Walters exhibition was just a scratch on the surface. I'll have a good glass of red for you Les! x
